How to Wear “Oversized” Winter Trends If You Are a Petite Woman
We were on board for peplum, plaid and emerald green, but when oversized looks began to dominate the fall 2013 runway, a cry was heard around the world from every petite woman. It’s one of the basic golden rules for women who are petite: don’t wear anything bulky, baggy or too big. We have been asked on many occasions, how can petite women wear fall’s hottest oversized looks without getting lost in the trend? Luckily, some of the most stylish petite celebrities showed you how!
Oversized Sweaters
Designers like The Row chose comfy, cozy sweaters in their fall collections to keep extra warm this season. Unfortunately, bulky shapes and heavy knit are two things that usually do not flatter a petite woman’s frame.
Petite fashion icon Olivia Palermo (5’4″) pushed up the sleeves to avoid her arms swimming around in the sweater and opted for a tight cropped pant to take away from the top-heaviness of the look.
Oversized Blazer
The great thing about an oversized blazer, as Rag & Bone showed on the runway this year, is that it can be worn many different ways. For a petite woman, however, the best way is with a miniskirt or tight dress to accentuate the curves.
Triple threat petite celebrity actress, singer and dancer Selena Gomez (5’4″) completed her sleek blazer with a sequined minidress to add some sparkle and a pointed heel, every petite woman’s secret weapon as it gives the appearance of a longer leg.
Over-the-Knee Boots
Despite popular belief, over-the-knee boots are not only fitting for women with sky-high limbs, like those on 3-1 Phillip Lim’s runway this year. Just because the knee is covered does not mean that the leg will look stumpy, as long as you keep in mind your body proportions.
The best way to pull of this specific shoe if you are a petite woman is to wear a slouchy high-heeled boot with shorts or a dress. Look to petite actress Eva Longoria’s (5’1″) outfit for inspiration!
Bulky Fur Coat
Although it is soft and light, an overdose of fur can easily make a petite woman look heavy or give her an even smaller frame. To wear this popular runway trend, seen in Emilio Pucci’s fall 2013 collection, without losing your frame, opt for a tighter pant and a pointed heel.
Petite celebrity Kourtney Kardashian (5’0″) made her fur coat the statement piece to her outfit, a great idea to draw the eye easily up to her top half, thus elongating her body.
