BEAUTY AROUND THE WORLD
Lisa Ling traveled to China to investigate the growing multi-billion dollar Chinese beauty industry. What she discovered around Shanghai’s beauty scene was utterly appalling.
China, as a society, includes a large population of petite women who are often recognized around the world for their gorgeous black hair and intriguing brown eyes.
Unfortunately, though, it seems the influence of American fashion magazines like Vogue, Elle, Glamour, and a myriad other magazine have infected Chinese culture with their western ideal of beauty.
Vogue Magazine launched a Chinese edition just five years ago. Angelica Cheung, the editor-in-chief, tells Lisa Ling it’s been a success since the first issue hit the stands. “We were the first Vogue actually to make a profit in the first year,” she says.
AMERICAN BEAUTY DISTORTING THE WORLD
Has success for magazines, such as Vogue in China come at a price for Chinese women? Ling found that a growing segment of women has been persuaded that looking like Barbie, which means being blonde-haired blue-eyed, and Amazonian in stature, equals real beauty. The impacts of this indoctrination have been mind-blowing.
A growing segment of Chinese women is undergoing plastic surgery including procedures to change their eyelids, cheek implants, lip injections, breast implants and even dying their hair blonde! The sad news is that it doesn’t end there.
Among the most extreme new trends in China is the rise of leg extension procedures. Yes, you heard me, leg extensions! “These women feel that being petite is negative and keeps them from feeling confident, attractive, and competent in the workplace.”
Furthermore, even Chinese men are unable to gain employment without increasing their height. These men and women are breaking their legs and enduring a year and a half of painful procedures, all in the name of being taller.
HEIGHTISM DESTROYING A SOCIETY
In China, Ling says height is a sign of status and is seen by some as a prerequisite for success. “Minimum height requirements are not unusual for most jobs, even admission to college and to land a date!”
Ling interviewed Jessy, a 27-year-old woman who’s interested in undergoing the procedure. She says she’s willing to take over a year off work to grow a few inches. Currently, she’s 5’3″. “I want to be 5’6″ or 5’9″. Just being taller makes me feel much confident, I’m jealous when I see tall girls walking around. I just want to be just like them.”
TALLER IS NOT BETTER
This ideology is repulsive! How awful and alarming to see the lengths some people are willing to go to be “taller.” Essentially, media influence has successfully instilled the idea that taller is better.
These false images are not something we should emulate.
It’s time for the lines of beauty to be redefined, or we will be lost in a soulless search for some arbitrary idea of beauty and perfection.
FASHION MAGAZINES DISTORT REAL BEAUTY
Current fashion magazines, clothing designers, and photographers are all culprits in this conspiracy to perpetuate fraudulently a false image of beauty. Next, we have the entertainment world, where agents and celebrities exaggerate their height, again creating false images misrepresenting who “the stars” really are.
American men, like Tom Cruise, sometimes wear lifts in their shoes. The women are wearing enormous five to seven-inch heels as if four-inch heels aren’t high enough!
The fashion, beauty, entertainment industry, and the mainstream media need to realign their compass to reality. It’s time to stop inundating and polarizing women with Amazonian illusions that only a small minority of women represent.
This look is a tiny fraction of the real female population (only 3% of women are 5’9″ or taller while 70% of all women are 5’5” and under). The average size of a woman is 5’3″.
It’s time we stop buying these old rags. They are a JOKE to women!
This Oprah Winfrey show on “Beauty Around the World” was highly revealing and provided additional support as to why petite women need to reclaim the marketplace. It’s about time petite women reign in the world of beauty and fashion.
Men prefer petite women, not Glamazons, it’s a fact, there is even scientific proof from recent studies and research to make the case.
