Style Questions & Answers For Everyday Petite Women

Recently two of the most favorite petite women and colleagues I know dared to ask me questions on styling, which I found to be great questions as they are dilemmas that petite women do encounter almost on a day to day basis when getting dressed. As I responded with answers and tips, it occurred to me these would be great to share with all petite women. Free to subscribe to Bella Petite!

Are you ever too old and too short to wear skinny pants?

Skinny pants can be worn well into your 50s. Styling them correctly is what will make them work for your age. Although, the skinny pant is said to be made for the tall and long legged ladies. Petite or curvy women can also wear them when the look is balanced in proportion to the body type. When less than 5’6”, avoid tent shirts and tunics with a skinny jean, so that you don’t appear 4 inches short. You may see a 20 year old in skinny jeans with a variety of fun tops at any given time of the day. A 30 year old may don the skinnies when she’s expected to go out for a night on the town, pairing them with jackets or button down shirts. 40s to 50s can opt for a clean conservative overall style by adding, cardigans, and blouses, dressed with ballet flats. Not feeling comfortable with the skinny pant? Then choose the straight leg pant which will also portray the skinny effect and fits best on plus size gals.

What types of outfits look best on my petite frame with ballet flats, stilettos, platforms and wedges?

Ballet flats: Usually worn most with separates such as, mini skirts, maxi skirts, skinny pants, cropped pants, shorts, summer dresses.

Stilettos: Evening gown, cocktail dress, pencil skirt, jeans, trousers, wide leg pants. Stilettos add height, and enhance a great pair of legs. Be sure to break them in and practice your walk prior to wearing them.

Platforms: Easier on your feet if you’re going to be standing. Platforms look fabulous with the maxi dress or skirt, especially on petites. The ultra-wide leg pants and a circle skirt are all the more chic when accompanied by platforms too.

Wedges: A midi skirt with wedges for a street style. A wedge shoe with boot cut or flared leg jeans convey a 70s retro vibe. But, a summer dress or pair of shorts won’t skip a beat with wedges.
